Book Reports and Thanksgiving Break!

Dear Parents and Students,
Tomorrow we will be starting our book reports!
Last week I sent home a list of ideas for book reports and I have to say I am most excited about the ideas that several of the students have shared with me about what they plan to do for their reports. Because there are varying lengths to the chosen books, I am leaving the due date at November 30th but please know that we can actually do the book reports anytime between now and then. Email or call me with any questions.

On another note, Thanksgiving break will be from November 21-25. I plan on giving minimal assignments during the break as I feel so strongly about holidays being times where families can go and relax and enjoy one another and some fun activities. I would appreciate it though if you would make certain that your children read during this time and then of course, record it on their reading calendars.

We do have a book order due on the 20th. I sent them home today and there looks like some good deals on holiday books and possibly some good ideas for Christmas presents. Scholastic is offering a $5.00 reward certificate useable with the January order for each online order submitted by parents. The online code is GN73W and you can order the books at scholastic.com . The books ordered online are shipped along with my regular classroom order so there is no shipping costs. Please look into that!

Well, the year is moving right along and thus far I have been very pleased with the way the students are learning and improving. Keep up the reading and math help in the evenings and please call or email if you have any questions or concerns!  Thanks for all that you do!
Until Next Time,
Mr. Garfield

Thank You!
I just wanted to give a big "Thank You" to all of you who attended our Fall SEP Conferences last week. There was 100% attendance and I feel so great about the visits that we had.
I am most impressed with the level of encouragement that you give your children and I have found the great correlation between the encouragement and follow through from parents and great success of our students.
This week I will doing a couple different "in class" reading assessments to assure that every student is progressing in their reading improvement.
Thanks again for your support and please call, send a note, or email me if you have any questions or concerns!

Spelling Lists and Other Stuff!
Hey parents, I handed out new spelling lists today. Our spelling tests are on Friday. You will notice some bigger and actually pretty difficult words on the list. These words are some of the most difficult the students will have all year and yes, students in the past have been able to easily learn these words in the week they study them. Keep in mind, the students have seen and written these words already this school year so they are familiar.
We are struggling a bit in class with students bringing toys and and other distractions that are not appropriate to bring to school. We do not have show and tell in 4th grade but do occasionally allow students to bring science items, i.e. rock collections to share with the class. Please check your students backpacks in the morning if you suspect they may be bringing toys or electronics that may take away from learning. This will help a lot in the way our class runs.
So far I have been very impressed with the reading and other homework happening each day. Keep it up as this makes such a difference in the success of your child's education!
Thanks for all you do!

Our First Week!

The time is already flying by!
Today we will be completing our first week of school. I have already seen some amazing work by many of the students in our class.
I would encourage you all to continue to have your child read to you each night, check and sign their homework, and keep their yellow planner sheets up to date.
I am amazed at how well this class of students read! I have had all of them read to me individually just to see where they are at as far as their reading and they have all done so well. I attribute this to you for encouraging reading throughout the summer.
We have started a poetry unit and finished Lesson 3 in our math book today. Fridays will be our "Math Task" day. This will be an opportunity for the students to complete math tasks in our class that encourage and teach a deeper more complex level of thinking. If the students work hard on this, there should be no math homework on Fridays. My hope is that this will help to keep weekends free from a lot of homework so that your families can spend some time together without assignments to worry about.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend!
Until Next Time, Mr. G
